I think the proper disposal is to burn it. You could check with a local boy scout troop and see if they everdo a ceremony for disposing of old flags. I have seen a few troops do this. We did one at a family reunion several years ago. It was neat to have the scouts in the family in uniform (my grandfather is a WWII vet and very conscientious of flag etiquette, so I know it was done properly) and a very solemn moment.

US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8 states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"
Gosh have a big old picnic and gather 'round the burning can and give it a match.. then replace it with a new one :) Seems like a creative way to spend a Saturday, can't say it wouldn't be interesting ;)

You can always call your local American Legion or Veterans' Office.
They usually collect old flags and burn them every couple months.

I am Scout Leader and the proper way to dispose of an American Flag is to burn it. Depending the type of material it is made of. It the flag is cloth it can be given to a Girl Scout troop or Boy Scout troop to dispose of at a flag ceremony. If the flag is made of nylon take it to the VFW and they will dispose of it properly.

My thinking is that the flags that protesters burn aren't the old, tattered ones. They're certainly not doing it in a dignified manner -- they're acting maliciously.
