I still start with an hour on the treadclimber today! I was amazed, was done and home by 8:30 am, that is the ONLY way to go, to get it done before your day officially starts!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

2 hours yesterday (1 hour at curves in the AM and 1 hour water aerobics in the evening)

Today, 1 hour (so far) at curves.

I agree, doing it early is the best way to make sure it gets done for the day!

I agree with the morning exercise too its great to get it done right away but for me getting motivated is my problem...once I start I'm fine tho.
I did an hour hike and 45 minute weight lifting today.

Curves is closed today, but I got on my treadmill this AM. I ran 2 miles, which is kind of amazing because I haven't been on the tread or ran in several weeks (3? ugh) so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do more than a mile!! But, glad to know I could...and I hate to admit it, but it felt great.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

I missed Thursday, but have exercised every other day this week including today. Plan to work out on Sat to make up for Thursday.

I'm also journaling my eating and it's really helping me stay focused. If I know I have to write it down, I think twice before putting it in my mouth, it seems! Also, it's gotten me back on track 100% on water and taking vitamins: both of which I had gotten kind of inconsistent about.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Spinchick's been at an exercise conference. Good news: I learned a lot. Bad news: I can't move. Everything from the neck down hurts! Ha, ha, ha. My clients are laughing. It was fabulous. I worked with a BOSU (half ball on a flat board), stability balls, medicine balls, Body Bars, boot camp, core training, cycling, gliding disks, etc. There is so much variety out there. I was exhausted, though, at the end. It lasted 3 days. I skipped my last session. I have never done so many variations of lunges and squats! But I'm back. Loaded up with new info, so ask away. My fingers feel OK.....

Have you recovered yet, Helen? :)

I can't think of any specific questions, but anything that was new that was really fun that you could recommend for doing at home?

spinchick

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Yes and no. I recovered from the conference, but then taught 6 really hard Spin classes this week. Then - and learn from this, ha, ha - a cyclist friend of mine invited me on a ride. 40 miles. I said no problem. He said it was climbing. Again I said no problem. I ate my words. I died. It was a hard pace after a hard week. I gave up after 35 miles and had to have a friend come pick me up. The lesson? Listen to that little voice that says you're tired - and don't ride with anyone with thighs larger than yours. :-)

But to answer your question. In terms of fun that you can do at home, I like the gliding disks (http://www.glidingdiscs.com/ there are more DVDs available here http://www.savvierfitness.com/gliding_dvds.asp - even though you not a "pro" they may not know that). I took a gliding core class and a regular gliding class. Last year I took a gliding "gone wild" class as well. I like the feel of the disks and the variety of exercises. I loved the boot camp, but I don't think that would be very motivating for home. And if you get some tubing or a weighted bar or something you can work that into a home "dancing" routing with upbeat, fun music. The BOSU (half stability ball type of thing) is great fun, but again probably better in a class setting.

I want to sympathize that you "gave up" but it's hard when you consider that you gave up after (only!) 35 miles!!!! And even though you were tired, way to go for it. Amazing.

As far as the gliding disks, we've done a little of that at the kickboxing class I was taking, but using paper plates! We stood on the plates and did the "glide" and I was surprised at how you can feel that! I guess it is because you use more muscles for each movement -the push and pull-in each direction.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Yeah, you are right. But my ego took a bruising. :-} With the disks, you feel the pull in all directions. Back and side lunges are great. As are squat - slide to the side - squat. You can also do upper body work, core work, etc., not just legs. Balance work is fun, too. You can buy a cheap balance pad or inflatable disk. Work with a medicine ball, too, to make it more challenging. You can make a circuit with weights, stability balls, etc. and go quickly from exercise to exercise. Add some single legs hops in between, or jump squats or jump lunges, etc. to keep your heart rate up. Or "partner train" with your kids. Have them throw a ball to you as you try to catch it at different positions slightly behind you (like the numbers on a clock face). Works your core. Stand back to back and pass ball around you to the person behind you (works your waist). Or sit on a stability ball and crunch up, using your core to help you throw a (non-weighed) ball to your partner. Then crunch back down, then up and catch the ball, then crunch down and up and throw. It can be really fun.

I did get an hour on the treadclimber today :) I have been hanging at a certain weight for about a month now, and want to lose my final lbs starting now. Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Congrats! Isn't that an amazing feeling? It took me over a year of having lost the weight before I stopped "window shopping" at the plus size stores. Weird. Final pounds are hard. Change up you routine - add intervals - change your diet a little. Keep varying your routine. Add more exercise to your "normal" routine such as taking stairs, parking far away, bringing groceries in one bag at a time. We've heard it before, but it all adds up. Every extra movement you do counts. Good luck. Keep me posted.

I just have to cut out the stuff I have ADDED Back and increase the exercise. I am VERY proud for not gaining though because I know that I have learned new habits that will ensure I will not regain this weight! :) So, off to the gym! Have a great day!!! Tammy, nice job. You might be sore today, though. :-) Your body is capable of a lot, but mostly your brain let your breeze through the run. Before, when you were unsure of yourself, your brain stopped you as you became tired and said, "I can't go on." But now your brains says, "You've done this before body. You work past the fatigue and you'll hit your zone. Go for it."

Okay, I am going to jump on the exercise bandwagon again. Several months of not stepping on a scale and summer craziness has taken its toll. My goal is to lose 25 pounds and maybe even 30 if I can manage it. Hopefully I will be able to make time to exercise while the baby is down for her nap since the other kids will all be in school. Hi girls.

It might be good to set up a weekly (or twice-weekly) forum date with each other. Kind of like buddy training. You report in Fridays, for example, what you did for the week, how you did it, how you felt, etc. And if you didn't do anything, still report in. We all have weeks where we cannot get things done, and that's OK. The main thing is to keep in touch. That will help you get motivated. Sometimes even confessing is good too. I'll start. I made nachos for dinner...and got into my son's Hershey with almond bar. Oh, and I had a Skor bar earlier too. Ah, getting that off my chest felt good!

This is a great job Helen! I am down 2 more lbs (17 from my weigh range still, so ugh) but it is progress, and any progress is good progress! I am in Chicago right now, but plan to ramp it back up when I return. I have been doing fine on exercise but not paying as much attention to water and food... though eating way better, not really regulating how much or how often, which accounts for a slow loss.

Good Job Amy, this is a great time to get back on track and take care of YOU! ;)

I went to my thyroid doctor today. She is just shocked at how low my heart rate is considering the medicine I take (thyroid hormone since I have no thyroid due to cancer a couple years back). Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Hey Helen....

I wanted to run my "plan" by you and see if it makes sense. I want (need) to lose 20lbs (at least) by Christmas and that is my goal.

Monday - Weights, 1 hour
Tuesday - Run or elliptical, 30 min.
Cardio kickboxing, 1 hour class.
Wednesday -Weights, 1 hour
Thursday -Run or elliptical, 30 min.
Cardio kickboxing, 1 hour class.
Friday - Weights, 1 hour
Saturday or Sunday - Run or elliptical, 30 min.

I'm thinking this should be good, but is it right to alternate cardio and weights or should that happen on the same days with more actual days "off"? At this rate, I'll be doing an hour or more of some kind of exercise 5 days a week, 1 day of 30 min and 1 day off.

THANKS!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Question 1): How much more is that than you are doing now? If it's a lot, then you may deplete your resources, and get burned out or sick. It seems like a lot. Gradual increase is best.

Question 2): Why 30 min. run/cardio and then kickboxing? I am thinking you should cut back on one or the other, or alternate one day kickboxing, two days later run/elliptical. If you really want to lose weight, you need to focus on heavy weight training, i.e. weights that you can't lift more than 12 or so times.

To really change your body composition you need to work your muscles to fatigue. And then they need time to rest. All of the muscle building (i.e. toning) happens in the recovery phase. Heavier weight training will reshape your muscles and burn more calories - you will not get "big." But if you do squats or lunges in kickboxing, you may not want to work lower body the next day so your muscles can recover.

You want to be really working to lift those weights. In fact, pick up any of Cathe Friedrich's videos ( http://www.Cathe.com or http://www.collagevideo.com - I Iike Pyramid up/down and gym style series - stay away from cardio combos only because you do so much of it) for weight training. She is HARD - but very good.

So my wrap up would be: 1) Either the run/elliptical or kickboxing, depending on what you have time for, instead of both; 2) Heavier weight training; 3) A "clean" diet, i.e. lots of fruits and veggies, not a lot of processed foods, add high fiber grains. 4) Eat frequently, but small (every 2-3 hours); 5) Lean proteins; 6) Multi-vitamin; 7) Drink lots of water.

My theory is, and it's NOT scientifically proven anywhere but in my own head based on my own body, is that our bodies try to adapt. So what I do is vary my exercise and vary my calories to keep it "on its toes." Maybe one week stick to your original plan; the next week cut back a little as I recommended; the following week go back to harder plan. Try to vary your calories, too. One day eat more, next day less, day after medium. I believe that our bodies adapt to expending a certain amount of calories and taking in a certain amount of calories. Because technically - I do not eat that much. I spin about 5 days per week. I lift weights. I bike ride. I still weigh the same. Why? Because my body knows about how many calories I burn per week and I think it compensates! So now some weeks I do less, some weeks more. Trying to trick it into submission. Maybe even take two days off in a row(!) before a heavier week. Throw it for a loop.

You should be fine alternating the cardio/weight days unless, like I said, you do a lot of lower body work in kickboxing (then just do more legs that day and focus on upper body/core the next). Listen to your body. If you need to rest, rest. Then come back stronger. Keep me posted.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

1). It's a little more than I'm doing now, but not really that much more than I was doing in the spring when I was actively losing lbs (except for increasing the weight lifting intensity I guess.) Then I was doing curves MWF, KB on T& TH and I ran 3 days also. My kickboxing class was on summer hiatus until today but I've been doing weights and running on alternate days the last week or so. Most of the summer was Curves, running (sporadically) and water aerobics.

2). Why run and kickboxing?...Well, I just LOVE my cardio KB class, but I also wanted to keep up on my running. My goal is to run early in the day and then KB is in the evening. Should I cut back on the running for a while do you think? I hate to give up the KB...I saw great results from it before.

As far as weights, I thought it was lower weight/higher reps in order to not "bulk up"? I want the flab gone, but I don't want to look like the Hulk either.

Going to go look for those videos now... Thanks!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

As long as you feel good then stick to your plan. Make sure you eat enough and frequently to keep both your energy and metabolism up. If you feel really tired, then listen and slow down a little, then pick it back up. :-}

We've moved away from the "bulk up" thing because women don't usually "bulk" unless they are on stereoids, are predisposed to large muscles and work out for hours and hours at the gym. When you perform a lot of cardio, you can actually start burning muscles away, too. When you perform a heavier weight training set, you need more calories to recover afterwards, and you release a "fat burning" hormone that helps stoke the fires. If you are nervous at all, alternate your weight training so you do one very heavy day and one very light day a week (or however many days you want to train). The kind of muscles we women build actually look sexy ("we're too sexy for this post"), especially in the shoulder/arm area. Now, sometimes when you are increasing your muscle and you are not burning much fat you will feel bulkier for a little bit because the layer of fat on top of the muscle is still there. But as you start to whittle it down, you will love the way your new muscles look underneath - which in turn keeps you motivated to stick to your workout/eating habits.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

OK, I'm going to try it for 2 weeks and then see how it's going. Tonight was my first KB class again and I'm beat! But I know it takes a little getitng used to, also.

One more question (for now, lol) if I'm doing the weights as you say, is it possible I may actually gain before losing as muscle builds? I don't want to freak out over the scale, but of course it's hard to stay away from it, too. I just want to be prepared. :)

Mostly, I'm really excited. I feel out of the funk I'd been in and ready to get back to whole-heartedly attacking the flab! haha!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

It's hard doing something you've been out of for awhile! No matter how fit your are, doing something different is a challenge the first few times.

Yes, you can gain up to 1 pound of muscle per week if you work hard. So if you gain a pound of muscle and lose a pound of fat you will weigh the same (but have less fat). :-) However, when you first start training with weights, sometimes the muscles swell a little bit and retain some water (and extra blood probably), so they feel bigger (and clothes) tighter for a few weeks. Don't freak. As they get used to the work they will come down a little bit. Just watch what you eat - make sure you are eating enough food and "good" food.

Sometimes we all "hit the motivation wall," especially when you have come as far as you have. I am glad you are re-motivated! Keep us posted.

Guess I'll start posting on here and hold myself accountable!! Since we moved here 6 weeks ago I have been going to the track (walking)4-6 times a week depending on the weather and stuff. I started out doing 1-2 miles a day and have worked my way up to 3-4 miles a day. I have dropped 2 sizes in my pants and have of course lost some of my bust as well, lol. My weight isn't a concern to me, I just want to have some muscle tone and feel great! I am wanting to lose my belly though...but I'm afraid that might take more commitment on my part. I've always had a bit of a belly, even when I was a size 4 several years ago it stuck out some. All our money is going towards our house right now so joining a gym is out of the question for a few months....
Aside from crunches and trying to eat better (hard to do right now) does anyone have any ideas? I drink almost only water now, about 4 bottles a day and only drink soda and coffee once or twice a week now. I think my downfall with food is dinnertime...I tend to overdo it and/or eat too late in the evening...
Kudos to all of you keeping up the hard work!! It sounds like eveyrone is doing really great!!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Congrats on what you have done so far! Regarding the food issue, try to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. Don't let yourself get too hungry. Drink a full glass of water about 15 minutes before dinner, and eat your veggies or a salad (with low fat dressing) BEFORE the rest of your dinner. Eat slowly. This will allow you to eat less because you will have filled up on water and healthy stuff prior to eating the heavier foods.

You can tone up easily at home without joining a gym. I don't know if you have any equipment at all, but a stability ball and some tubing will work great. Or just use body weight. Pushups, lunges, squats, planks, crunches, reverse curls...they are all fabulous. Try to incorporate some cardio in between your sets. Work until your muscles fatigue - that's the only way to build them and by building muscle we increase our metabolisms.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

I hope everyone is having a great week and MOVING MOVING MOVING! :)

I'm just about back to where I was before I slacked off this summer, weight-wise. Angry at having to lose the SAME 5-7 lbs AGAIN, but realizing it's better than doing nothing, also. :)

The mornings are cool enough I've started running outside again. I don't know what it is, but for me that is such a peaceful 30 minutes and if I get no time to myself the rest of the day, at least I had that head-clearing time for me.

Make it a great week everyone!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Exactly. When I am not teaching classes I take a spin class so I can "clear my mind" and have time for myself. I also bike outside alone sometimes for the same reason. It's often the only time I have peace. Even when I'm in the bathroom they come in...sigh.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Wow, it's easy to justify not exercising when you start slacking off. Today is the first day this week I've made myself work out. It felt really good. I need to remember this so the next time I'm temped to slack off I'll remember how easy it is to keep slacking!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

yes, it's like you create momentum when you get going, but the same is true if you stop!! it is EASY to stop and hard to get going again. Better to just keep going. haha

I've been to the gym every day this week since Sunday! I'm pretty excited about that and so far, I'm not even CONSIDERING not going!!

Just remember how good you feel when your workout is OVER and done, the next time you think about slacking. It helps me to remind myself of that fact. :)

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Wow, the cat's away the mice don't play?

Sheesh. I'm baaaack!

I moved (but not to TX with Tammy, though I went to Dallas for Thanksgiving and ate like a piggie.) I didn't have high speed access for THREE VERY LONG WEEKS (yes I am shouting). I was so frustrated. But I am back so there is no hiding. I will post this in the other section as well so you know there are watchful eyes on you, lol (but these watchful eyes love chocolate!).

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Ahhh! You were in DALLAS!! Wish I'd known...I'm right near Dallas! Technically in a suburb of Dallas! A stone's throw from Dallas!! And I was here for Thanksgiving, too. LOL We could've met up!!! And shared some pumpkin pie!

I finally quit posting weekly here just because I felt like I was talking to myself. :)

Been a little out of my routine, but I did work out today (before I even knew you were back! haha). Trying to figure out how to work full time, be the mom, the cook, the maid, the dog walker....etc. and manage to get in some dedicated exercise, too. Can I have a couple more hours in the day, please?

Going thru a major life adjustment here, but we will get it in gear. I'm probably going to spring for a Y membership in January. My daughter LOVES to swim, so that may have to be key to my new routine. I either need to do somethiing WITH her or have her occupied for a time.

Anyhow, welcome back SpinChick! Step back from the chocolate! haha...

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

It's hard with change. I do love Dallas though. Almost moved there last year...to...Frisco? Yeah, that's it. Lots of nice gyms. Lots of bike riders. I will go back there at some point so we can meet up. No pumpkin pie, though. No chocolate in it. We had a fabulous Thanksgiving brunch at the Intercontinental in Addison and I tried to lay on the table under the chocolate fountain, but they would not let me.

It's hard to juggle. What time do you have to be in at work? I just finished writing an article about fitting exercise into your busy schedule. When I post it I'll let you know. Anyway, can you get up earlier at all and exercise at home? Can you fit anything in during your lunch hour? Or maybe just pick two nights a week and go right after work, just for 30 or 45 minutes? Once it gets warmer (it went from 82 when we arrived to 39 the next day!) you can maybe find some time to run again. I found weekends work well for me to exercise because I do it early in the morning. I feel like I've "earned" it.

If you ever go to the IKEA in Frisco, you can stop by and visit my cousin who works there. She would be motivated by you since you've done so well. But I won't put her name here, ha, ha, just in case.

Let me know how things go and I will def look you up when I get back to the Big D!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Unfortunately, I have fallen off the bandwagon. My excuse was that I had family in town visiting, but that only worked for two weeks. Then I just got lazy! But, I have been trying to watch what I eat so at least I haven't put a lot of weight back on. Today the kids are home from school due to the weather so probably a no exercise day, but I'm determined to get back on the bandwagon and make sure I don't balloon up over the holidays.

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Yes get back on as soon as you can. I have found the longer I am off the bandwagon the harder it is. Even it you can schedule a game of (indoor) tag with the kids. Or do some other physical games with them Twister? Tape papers to the floor and play hopscotch or "balance" on the paper. If you have a girl, put on some music and dance with her. My 8-year-old loves to do planks with me and she rocks at it. Some kids like Tai Boe. Or if you have a WII, maybe box or play tennis?

Get back on with something easier than you are used to. Look at the big picture. This is just a little blip in your life. Get back on track as soon as possible and you won't even notice..... :-)

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Nice article, Helen!!

I joined the local Y today. I checked out a few places here and it was the most reasonable for price and what my daughter, who is almost 11, can also do there. I had to have a place she can go as well since it's just the 2 of us now.

We both have orientation appointments this week, so we will for sure be there at least 3 days! haha.

I'm really excited, actually. I know how much better I feel when I exercise and even tho it's going to be hard since I work full-time (well, more than full time, really) I'm going to figure it out and make it a part of life! I've been off the band wagon mostly for about 6 weeks and I can tell already. I'm ready to feel good again!!!!

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

Hey you guys!

Glad you are getting back on the "wagon" Tammy. You will feel so much better once you find your routine. It's hard to make a move and try to get settled. It will be hard in the beginning, but after a couple of weeks you will fee like your "old" exercising self again.

Thanks for the link, Thimbleluvr. I don't think people realize the value of just MOVING every day. We get so caught up in what we do (or don't do) in the gym that sometimes we fail to realize that just incorporating activities into "real" life will give us a far larger gains.

Take care, girls. Keep me posted. I worked out my upper body just now - haven't done it properly in awhile - they are shaking. :-)

Re: Daily Exercise Support!

I had my first really good, full workout yesterday, finally! I'd done a little during the past week, but we had a lot of orientation things for my daughter to attend at the gym, so it wasn't the same.

I ran and did some weights and I can feel it today!! :) I actually like feeling a little sore, it reminds me that I've used muscles that hadn't been doing much and it kind of makes me feel 'alive'. It also reminds me to watch what I put into my mouth. haha. Is that odd? haha.

Have a great week everyone. My goal is 5 workouts, which might be hard because I'm going out of town next weekend, but going to do my best!

Lord I'm wasn't 5lbs from pre-kiddo weight when I was 5 minutes pregnant I think! haha. Congrats crazymomma! I have a LONG ways to go to that point.

I am doing good tho. Walking daily for 30 min at work and hitting the gym a few nights also. On nights I don't go to the gym, I've been trying to walk. So I guess I really am walking about an hour a day, which I just realized!

I've also cut out my morning cappuccinos (bad habit!) and replaced it with coffee and these sugar free flavorings I've found! I've also cut out the soda which is touch considering I'm working at pepsi, haha, but drinking lots of water. Hopefully all these small changes will add up to big differences!! :)

Yesterday we went to the school to watch the kids during field day. I had two involved in the morning, then we ate lunch with all four and then two doing the activities in the afternoon. According to my pedometer, I walked just under 12,000 steps or 4.35 miles!! I guess having the kids on opposite ends of the field made for lots of running back and forth!
