Friday Fit Club

OK, for those of you who need to be held accountable (ahem - me?) Friday Fit Club is here! Every week, jot down your goals, thoughts, how you ate, how much you exercised...even what you did "bad" (the goal of the "bad" part is first, to confess - second, to show that it's not the end of world - third, to see that we all are human and face the same problems). Then every Friday, log in here and report on your notes. Let's cheer eachother on. See how we all stack up. This is a forum and a support group. No one will put you down for eating that ice cream. And those nachos. Oh, and those Oreos, too. And Starbucks - three times this week. Uh, I think I just confessed....

Our goal is to get healthier, stronger, fitter. Let's go to it!

Re: Friday Fit Club

So I'm either late for last Friday or early for this Friday. Oh well. I'm 3 pounds toward my 25 pound goal with a couple weeks of effort.

We'll see how this week goes when I splurged and made carrot cake on Sunday and we'll have birthday cake on Thursday. Oh, and the fun size candy bars I ate yesterday. Maybe it's a good thing I'm limiting myself to getting on the scale once a week so I don't get discouraged by the daily ups and downs.

You're fine Amy...we JUST started this thread so it's the first week, but it's never too early or too late to start! :)

Don't panic over your cake and etc. Just watch your portions when you want to indulge and keep moving to make up for it!

Remember it's okay to have "some" cake, it's usually not ok to have "the entire" cake! haha!

Re: Friday Fit Club

Look at your whole week and try to keep it balanced. Don't fret over a piece of cake here and a piece of cake there if the rest of week is pretty good. If I know I'm having something one day, I'll eat a little less the days before and after to make up for it. Just never weigh yourself after a bag of chips or Chinese food.... :-)

Re: Friday Fit Club

Okay, my week was kind of a mixture of ups and downs. First of all, my Curves membership had expired so I decided to go to a "real" gym (not that there is ANYTHING wrong with Curves! I love that place!) but being military, I have access to military fitness centers, very nice ones, for free. I've always been too intimidated to go to the gym and work out in the vicinity of "people" (men) unless I was already "in shape" which is kind of dumb since it defeats part of the purpose of going to the gym to get into shape! (And somehow, my embarrassment did not extend to the BUFFET line! Go figure!!)

Anyhow, I am over that. I deserve to be at the gym as much as anyone else so I walk in and do my thing and think nothing twice about who else is there or what they may think (or probably not even think!) about me. I'm there when I could be home on the sofa eating bon-bons, so who cares!!

Anyhow, so I went to the gym EVERY DAY this week! I also learned the meaning of "DOMS" - delayed onset muscle soreness. haha. Basically, on Monday I totally over did it on upper body and could hardly lift my arms again until about Wednesday! Lesson learned. So, as far as the weights go, I pulled back the reins some, but I am feeling good now and back at it, just being more careful to not over strain!

I also tried the elliptical this week for the first time, which I enjoyed. I got some running in as well this week.

My problem does not seem to be exercise; it is food. I had a couple days that were really good, but then I had a day where I was out of town for an appointment. Time got away from me and by lunch I was STARVED, which lead to less than stellar food choices. :( Mostly, I think portion size is my issue. UGH.

My weight is basically stable this week, but I have cardio kick boxing starting next week too, so I should be getting plenty of exercise and once my eating is a bit more under control I hope to see some lbs fall off.

I guess it's just another week of progress if not perfection! Can't wait to hear about everyone else!

Re: Friday Fit Club

DOMS. Yes, I know that well. :-} We ALL get it when we do something new. After my fitness conference, I could not sit down very well to go to the bathroom....my thighs and butt were too sore. Seems like you did well though and I am proud of you for not being intimidated about the gym. You have every right to use it, and like you said, you could be home eating Bon Bons (which btw USED to be my favorite, favorite, favorite). I did a little less than my usual, most of it half-hearted. 40 mile bike ride Sunday, half-hearted abs Monday, upper body and hard spin class Tuesday, easy easy spin class Weds. and more half-hearted abs, 15 minutes of half-hearted upper body Thursday and moderate spin class, barely any abs today and no spin class. I teach tomorrow and then I am OFF Sunday and Monday because - as you can see - I am tired. It's so hot here now (110+) that I have no desire to exercise, thus all the half-heartedness.

Did fine overall with eating except Weds. night I got up at 12:30 a.m. to finish my pasta(!), had too much sugar overall, and then today I made a mistake with a print project and had to pull the job off the press (I am also a graphic designer), so that meant a nice Toblerone bar and half a box of Wheat Thins. Sigh. But I plan to get a good night's sleep today and get back on track tomorrow. How is everyone else doing?

reporting in, I have been out of control for three weeks, lol! I am ill right now, but kicking it back into gear Monday with exercise if I am recovered enough!

I have been eating lots of regular stuff, have to return to healthy stuff. Hopefully I will be well enough to go shopping by Sunday! ;) It really makes a huge difference when you eat processed foods vs fresh! :( Also, I miss my treadclimber.

Re: Friday Fit Club

Sounds like we all had a rough week this time. I was good with exercise and got in 4 days (I think). It was the eating that did me in (I need to freeze half of the carrot cake the next time I get that craving and not do it when we have a birthday the same week. But, I've been pretty good at letting the kids eat the birthday cake and not me. That's a positive step.

So, my goals for this next week are better eating and portion control and even more exercise although my aching calf muscles will have to just deal with it and get some toning back or something.

Re: Friday Fit Club

Well I was a little lazy again this week. Boo hoo on me. I've been staying up late and then being too tired to get up early and do my strength training. I've been much better with my eating this week - not a lot of "crazy" stuff. Probably a little too much food overall, but PMS....well, you know. :-)

I made a big decision this week. I decided not to ride the Century (100 mile) ride Saturday. I could physically do it, but I would be tired next week. I've already ridden the same Century. It's not a big deal anymore. So I will be getting up at 3:30 a.m. instead and driving the rest of the cycling crew to our start point, then picking them up at our end point. My contribution. It actually feels good to say "no" to something I did not really want to do. 6.5 hours of actual saddle time is a lot - and hard. And I don't feel like it. I've got a 62 miler (and a very hard one) next month, so I'll pscyhe myself up for that!

I didn't get as much exercise as I wanted this week, but I managed 3 days with workouts and tried to get lots of incidental exercise in by running up and down the stairs lots of extra times. Something must be going right, I'm down another 2 pounds for a total of 5 out of my 25 pound goal!

Re: Friday Fit Club

Helen, I have decided the last couple of weeks to MAKE myself go to bed earlier. I tend to be a night owl if given the choice, but I have to get up very early to get dd off to school. If I don't get at least a full 7 hours of sleep, then I have unhealthy days. I tend to eat when I'm tired...and not exercise. lol It's been hard, but I'm feeling really good too, since I've been getting myself to bed earlier. (Earlier being 11PM lol)

So, my week.....other than today -which I haven't done any exercise (life happened!), was really good. I will go to the gym tomorrow instead of today, no biggie. I followed my plan and worked out daily otherwise. Made it to my fav kickboxing classes, too! So glad those started up again! It's fun so it makes it an easier thing to get up and do!

Food.. ..well, that is still the struggle. I didn't realize until today, but the cravings...yea, PMS here too. I gave in to them a little, but am trying to be good!! Overall, my week was improved with room for more improvement as far as eating. Another week of progress, I suppose.

I'm trying to stay off the scale for now. We are going to measure next week at kick boxing and I'm hoping to just see results without stressing over the scale...which hasn't been moving much in any direction at this point!!

Congrats Amy!

It takes baby steps. Anything is possible, one step at a time.

Tammy, so glad you are enjoying the kickboxing. It's important to do things we enjoy. I think I'm stuck in my weight lifting rut - I need to do something different. That's probably why I don't get up early anymore. 11 is a good bedtime. I was up until 1:30 last night working, but I took a little "dance" break by my desk. That's the bad part about working from home.

Onward and upwards. I DO have to get to bed. 3:30 will come before I know it. Good job girls.

BTW, where are the rest of you? I know you are out there. Don't be afraid. We are all in this together. :-)

Re: Friday Fit Club

I am posting for this week.... BACK on track about 90%! I hit the gym three times but was crushed to find out BOTH treadclimbers at my gym are now broken. They never bothered fixing one and now the other is broken! This is my most FAVORITE machine. I tried to do the treadmill yesterday but stopped after 20 BORING minutes. I will hit spinning next week if it is not fixed. UGH!

Re: Friday Fit Club

Yes, spin, spin, spin. :-) If they are still broken and you need some more cardio, try alternating. For example 10 min. treadmill, 10 min. elliptical, 10 min. rower. Or do intervals on treadmill. Set up your music (or download a Podcast for walking/running) so it speeds up and slows down. Find songs that increase speed during choruses for example and then pick up your pace for that part. If they will let you, walk sideways a little. Maybe backwards (unless they throw you out). Or alternate sudden steep hill during a chorus, then back down almost flat. If you use your imagination it can go quickly. But you have to trick yourself into thinking you are having fun.....

Good idea! I am SUCH a creature of habit. That just destoyed my week. It is hard to explain but my zest and motivation went completely out the window. Tomorrow I will make the best of it. Since I have been OFF track several weeks, it is just 10X harder to get back on track and what a wrench to get my first week back! Anyway, My goal will be to get that 60 min of cardio tomorrow even without the treadclimber. WAAA! I love the spinning but I can't go every day due to my daughter's school hours, but at least I can count on that a few times this week, even though not every day! Thanks Helen :)

Re: Friday Fit Club

I'm first, I'm first! LOL.

I was much better with my eating this week. I discovered that my heart palpitations, which have been raging since July 4th, get better when I cut back on sugar. Sigh. So I limit my chocolate to once per day or so now. I palp a little, but not the 24/7 ones I was having. They were making me crazy. Am teaching 6 spin classes this week - more than usual, but I will survive. No bike riding thank goodness. I lifted weights for upper body T-TH, and did abs M-W. Skipped today and will probably skip tomorrow as I have 2 spin classes to teach Saturday. I only do back-to-backs in an "emergency" but they couldn't find an instructor. It's very hard on the body. At least for me.

Re: Friday Fit Club

Gosh you are a busy woman, spinchick! :) Glad to hear the palps are better...darn sugar!!!

My week started off REALLY rough. I kind of pigged out on Monday and then had a major sugar coma. Hated that, so stopped that. Tuesday was better and then the rest of the week was perfect.

I did weights on Wed & Fri, kickboxing on Tu and Thur and I ran almost 30 minutes one day using a "random" setting (at a beginner level!) on the treadmill, which then included some low inclines. I've been feeling THAT!

I've done a lot better at eating at regular intervals, smaller "meals". I always feel better when I eat that way, but sometimes I get tired of thinking about food every couple hours, too.

Overall, it started out a very rough week but ended on a very good note.

Re: Friday Fit Club

That's fabulous, though! Nice work.

And the inclines on the treadmill are good practice for those hills in the 5K. When I ran my 5K three(?) years ago (my one and only) I rocked on the hills because of cycling. But I DIED on the flats. I felt infants could run faster than me. We should try to practice what does NOT come easy for us because that's where we are weakest. Since you do well on flats, maybe add more inclines into your runs like you did this week - steeper and steeper. You will run slower up them, but the trick is to teach your body to "climb."

Yeah, I feel busy, too. Work, work, spin, spin, lift, lift. But I've gotten my lifting down to a science so it's very quick. I don't have a lot of time. I vary it almost every time I work out, but it's still "down and dirty." I break the work up and stick it in where I can (hence abs one day, upper body the next). And when I don't have a lot of time I work HARDER but for less time - sometimes just 15 minutes. I always finish upper body with one set of full push ups until my arms nearly fail. I figure that will hit what I missed.... :-)

I tried to do better with eating this last week. I discovered that yogurt works well when I'm wanting something sweet. The only problem is keeping the kids out of "my" yogurt. The extra fridge in the garage works well for that since they don't go out there often.

I struggled last week with exercise and this week we'll see how it goes. I'm pretty miserable with either allergies or a cold today so I'll have a pity party and get on track better tomorrow.

Hi everyone! Hope you had a good week!

Amy, I do the yogurt for a treat, too. I like the Light 'n Fit ones becaue they are low-cal and taste great. If I'm feeling really indulgent I add a spoon of light cool-whip (if it's in the house). Otherwise, I add some ground flax seed for crunch.

My week was ok. I had some stress going on and exercise was a little spotty, but I've dropped a couple lbs none-the-less. Hoping this is a kick start since my weight has been pretty consistenly NOT moving for a while. We'll see. :)

Re: Friday Fit Club

Exactly, Tammy. And we don't beat ourselves up over it. I find it hard when I have those weeks not to overeat, but you girls look like you are handling it well. The yogurt is a good idea. I buy chocolate yogurt from Trader Joe's, freeze it, then bring it to the gym. By the time I am out of class, it's defrosted enough to resemble froze yogurt...except I know what's in it! I did too many spin classes this week. Tired. My Supergirl shirt is rubbing off on my ego. :-) Time to retire it...I think. But I ate much better. And it turns out I didn't gain 8 pounds so far this year as I thought. It was actually only 4 or 5. So that's good news.....I'd like to lose the last 5 only so that I can be down to where I was when I first lost the 82 pounds. But then again, I have put on muscle, too, since then so I may end up looking too drawn in the face (too bad not the butt!)

Re: Friday Fit Club

First, can I say TGIF!!

I have had a REALLY good week! I have stuck to my plan exactly. I did some kind of exercise every day since last Sunday. 3 days of running alternated with 3 days of weights and then my 2 nights of kickboxing (just because I love it!)

However, the scale has barely budged! ugh. I know my weight tends to drop in spurts, so I'm determined to keep it up next week as well, and hopefully the body will react to all this work pretty soon!

That said, I am feeling different after having added the weights workout to my schedule. I've noticed when I move to do something in a certain way, I "feel" muscles where I didn't before...not sure if I'm explaining that in an understandable way, but I guess it's just that I'm feeling stronger in ways I hadn't felt it before. Unfortunately, I just need some of that "fat" to fall off, too! haha

I hope everyone else has had a successful week too!

Re: Friday Fit Club

I jumped back on the exercise bandwagon and got exercise yesterday and today. I've been good with my eating, but the scale doesn't budge much, just fluctuates back and forth. Still, I tell myself this weight was put on over years so I can't expect it to fall off in a matter of weeks, right? And since I'm building muscles some of the fat is probably just transferring over to muscle so it all progress.

spinchick
(Clever Personal Trainer)

Re: Friday Fit Club

You girls are rockin'! Yes, muscle does weigh more than fat. Plus when you first start working out with weights you might retain some more water in your muscle the first few weeks.

As much as you are working out, you should start seeing some results. The "feel" of the muscle is fabulous, Tammy. I know exactly what you mean.

In order to get the scale to budge, you may have to look at your diets. Make sure you are eating ENOUGH (but not too much), frequently, lots of fruits and veggies and lean proteins. Limit sugars and simple carbs (eat healthy, high-fiber carbs). Try keeping a food journal to see exactly how much you eat. I had a metabolism test done in July and my basal metabolic rate (what I need to just survive without exercise) is 37% higher than the average woman my age. However, the total calories I need to sustain life, EVEN at that higher rate, is only 1,700 calories per day (i.e. 2.75 of a famous Italian chain's bread sticks). Of course, add a 500 calorie spin class onto that and I'm up to 2,200, but I don't spin every day. Still, if I wanted to lose weight, an average of 1 pound per week, I would need to cut out almost 500 calories per day. So pretty much 1,700 calories with exercise per day to lose a pound per week! So monitor your calories for a few weeks and see what you are really eating. I usually end up eating a lot of pizza crusts and leftover peanut butter and jelly sandwich crusts, and it all adds up...but somehow I forge to count that, he, he.

OK, even though the scale isn't moving really, I did wear some shorts yesterday that had been "snug" in the hips last time I put them on. They slid right up and I could easily breathe. So, obviously something is happening.

I dont know what is wrong with me. I have lost 40 pounds since june(I was hospitalized with pnemonia) and I look great. But i have no desire to do anything to help it along. Like with walking or going to the gym. I still need to lose about 33 more pounds. I have been eating ok, just not moving. I am a stay at home mom with older children so I am not running after them anymore. How do you all get motivated?

Re: Friday Fit Club

One of my motivators has been that I stopped fitting into my size 8 clothes and had to bump up to a size 10. That and I don't want people to look at me and wonder when the next baby is due since I still have a tummy bulge that needs to be worked down.

I found that just telling myself I was going to go out walking doesn't work. I found some workout dvds that I enjoy doing. I'd love to get a treadmill or something that I could throw in for variety but that's still on the wish list for now.

I don't know, I guess I finally reached a point where I started to put on weight as I got out of my 20s and just decided that I need to do something now before I let myself go like my mom did for years. The fact that mom is now almost down to my current weight is providing some motivation. I'm built smaller so it would be personally embarassing to have my mom weigh less than I do.

Now to get off the computer and get some exercise in for today!

Re: Friday Fit Club

What worked for me in the beginning was to set a goal to do a 5K. You don't hae to run it. You can walk it if you want. But having a concrete goal other than just "losing weight" really seems to help. Or if you want to ski this winter, or learn to water ski this summer. Set an athletic goal - find out what it takes to get there - and set a "training plan" in order to succeed. Otherwise, if you're like me, you'll just flail about aimlessly.... :-0

Tammy, that's the best way to judge! We all get so hung up on the numbers on the scale. I never weigh myself, but I did a week ago to see if I was "right" that I'd put on a few. Sure enough, I was. The way our clothes fit is the best indicator and that's really what matters, anyway. Muscle takes up less room than, uh, fluffiness, so clothes fit better and look better....

Once you start exercising, and see some results and then realize how much better you feel, it gets easier and easier to maintain some motivation overall.

My advice is to find something you REALLY like so you won't want to miss it, ever! For me, I found a kick boxing class at the community rec center. I tried it and enjoyed it and do whatever I can to avoid missing a class!

I did my 3 days of weights, and lots of cardio. I feel really good and the scale was trying to edge it's way down...until this AM. ugh. Hopefully it's just a PMS issue, because I really have been 100% this week! haha!

Anyhow, it feels good to be doing what I should and I know the eventual results will be worth it. :)

PERFECT exercise 6 hours of cardio and an hour of weights. Going to meet with a trainer Tuesday and start personal training 3X a week. He said maybe 2 or 3 months to trim my lard, lol! Anyway, excited about ADDING that! Hope everyone else had a great week!

I did pretty good this week, 4 days of workouts and i even tried a new DVD. Food wise I did pretty good, but that Halloween candy is killing me!! I should know better than to open it before the holiday.

Re: Friday Fit Club

Lookie here, I'm first! Because technically it's Friday for some of you. Ha, ha, ha. Somehow I missed last week on this board. Huh. Look like you guys did GREAT. Lots of exercise. Are you getting the "feel good" or the "high" from the exercise? That's what keeps you motivated to stick with it. Like Tammy's kickboxing. And my Spinning. I rode twice this week - once on Sunday by myself. It was heaven. Beautiful day. Moderate ride. About 20-25 miles. Nothing too long. Rode to spin class and back Tuesday. Only 15 minutes each way, but it was for my head, not my butt. I forgot how good it feels to be outdoors on my bike.

Keep up the good work! I look forwarding to hearing how this week went for y'all. I had a little run in with Ding Dongs.....

Re: Friday Fit Club

This week was somewhat challenging because it is "Fall Break" and it's always harder when my daughter is home, it seems. I didn't make it to the gym as much as I'd liked to have, but I did do something every day nonetheless. My routine was just a little, uh, unroutine. :)

I've lost about 7-8 lbs this past month or so! I've noticed some "curvature" to my arms. And even though she tried to KILL us with ab work this week at kickboxing, I've been doing abs daily so I was not only able to keep up, I wasn't really sore after!

I am feeling that "high" from exercise. I ALWAYS feel so good afterwards and lately I've even felt like I could go on longer! I just sometimes have to REMIND myself that I always feel good after! haha!!

Re: Friday Fit Club

I've done pretty good all around this week. (The kids helped finish off the opened candy!) I started adding more time to my workouts because I feel like I have the energy. I'm not seeing the weight come off like I had hoped, BUT I can tell that I'm getting more defined muscles, so if the fat is turning to muscle I can live with that. And I can fit into my smaller jeans better. Still not as well as I'd like, but I don't have as much of a tummy bulge.

Re: Friday Fit Club

My excuse for not posting on Friday is that I was out of town!! Anyone else??? :)

My week was one of travel. I did get a little bit of running in, but not much else. I made a point to try to walk extra though, and ate perfectly or was extra cautious with portion size when my options were limited.

Overall, it was a good week.

Hope it's the same for the rest of you!!!!

Re: Friday Fit Club

I had family visitng this week, so that's my excuse for not doing my regular exercise routine. But, my mom is an avid walker and has her pedometer on all the time, so while we were out sightseeing, she kept track of how far we walked. The best day was our 5 miles walking around the zoo. Since Mom never took off on walks on her own, I'm assuming we hit at least 2-3 miles every day.

Re: Friday Fit Club

HEY YA'LL! (I'm moving to TX, I'm allowed to say ya'll now. haha)

Hope everyone in the fit club is still around and doing good! And survived Halloween candy!!

I survived, by just avoiding it. I didn't buy any until the night before and have just stayed out of it. I had 1 mini box of Hot Tamales, but that is IT! Just decided if I started I might not stop and I've worked too hard to blow it now!! And really, I didn't even feel deprived. I just feel good and candy and sweets (and evil sugar!) would not make me feel that way.

Still working out like a fool...5-6 days per week. Doing weights, some running and cardio kickboxing. And watching what I eat...darn it, it's ture that diet and exercise are the real key! :)

Hope to hear from everyone else!!!

Re: Friday Fit Club

Wow, the cat's away the mice don't play?

Sheesh. I'm baaaack!

I moved (but not to TX with Tammy, though I went to Dallas for Thanksgiving and ate like a piggie.) I didn't have high speed access for THREE VERY LONG WEEKS (yes I am shouting). I was so frustrated. But I am back so there is no hiding. I will post this in the other section as well so you know there are watchful eyes on you, lol (but these watchful eyes love chocolate!).

Re: Friday Fit Club

I must be doing something right. I hopped on the scale last night after not being brave enough to get on it for a couple months. I'm down 10 pounds!! And here I was worried that I awas never going to start losing the weight beyond my first 3 pounds. No wonder my clothes have been fitting better. So that's my good news for the week. Now imagine what will happen when I add exercise back into the mix!

Re: Friday Fit Club

Congrats! It's so unpredictable with the weight loss thing. But a big component is your diet (which is why it's important to do both) and you said you were watching what you eat, so....

I was actually pretty good last week because I knew I had Xmas parties to go to. (Well today is Sunday so I went to one last night). I ate more olives and cheese than is humanely possible (I am a vegeterian and that was all I could find). I woke up this morning completely puffy. I guess there was more salt in the olives than I thought, ha, ha!

Re: Friday Fit Club

Hmmm....look at me all alone here. All lonely. Lonely. Lonely. Lonely. Well ha! I am here now. I did really well over Christmas with my food. Barely ate anything Xmas day (long story). But - alas - Christmas night I slept only 2.5 hours then had to teach a spin class at 9 the next morning. So I napped in the afternoon, woke up and ate everything in sight! I was so tired I was like a little machine. Back on track now, though. Spinning and lifting some (if not all) weights. Trying to stay somewhat on track. It's been a tiring year and I'm trying to wrap it on a positive note. How was all of your holidays?

Re: Friday Fit Club

Count me in! I need some accountability. I've been wearing my pedometer and counting steps, so I haven't been a total couch potato, but I keep telling myself I'll exercise tomorrow. The excuse that I was settling into the new house worked for a while, but we're pretty settled now so I can't use that anymore. All my up and down the stairs is keeping me semi-toned, though, so that's always a plus!
