broken finger...
|
|
My oldest son broke his index finger Monday at school, during P.E. trying to catch a football. The nurse had called and told me she thought he jammed it pretty bad and he was in alot of pain. So my husband went and picked him up at school, luckily my husband was home from work, he was taking care of me. Found out later the nurse was pushing on it, which I don't think she should have done.
It was swollen some and we put ice on it and gave him some Tylenol. The next morning I kept him home from school, it was swollen 3 times it's normal size, green color and was hurting badly. I took him to the E.R. and he broke it in two places! They just put a splint on it, and had me make an appointment with a orthopedic doctor on Thursday.
The orthopedic doctor has him in half a cast up to his elbow, because the breaks are bad. The one break is at his knuckle, and the other one is at the growth plate where the hand and finger connects. He doesn't have to have surgery, thank goodness.
He does go back to the doctor this week for another x-ray to make sure it's healing right.
If you had a broken finger before, how long does it take to heal up completely? Did you have any problems later with it?

All three of my son's have broken their fingers.(Basketball & Football) They all had to see an orthopedic surgeon but none of them needed surgery. It took one of my sons 12 weeks for it to completely heal. Then it was so stiff from being in the cast the orthopedic surgeon gave him different size rubber balls to squeeze to get motion back.He started with a big ball and you squeeze it so many times, then the next week he went on to a smaller size ball.He did that for 1 month and then he was fine. They haven't had any problems after and are still playing their sports.
Wishing your son a speedy recovery and I hope everything turns out well.

Here's what his half cast looks like....

None of my other kids have broken a bone. Why do they put a cast this big if it's only one finger broke in two places?

Amy because he has the finger broken in two spots one being the growth plate any kind of movement of the hand could interfere with the finger healing properly. You want to keep the finger and hand stablized and it should heal with no problems.

He went back to school today, I hope he's doing alright.
I had to tie his shoes before school for him, he said it was embarrassing...lol! Got to love 16yr olds!!
He is upset now because this month he could have went and got his drivers license, now he has to wait longer so he can heal up. My husband and I aren't ready for him to be driving on his own yet, he's still our baby boy.

He had his doctor appointment yesterday. They took another x-ray and it looks like it's healing good.
He will have to wear the cast for another 3 weeks. He doesn't like that!

I broke my hand and one finger in karate class a few years back. (Actually it was rather funny as I was sparring with my daughter and SHE broke the bones kicking me!) The break at the side of my hand healed rather quickly but the finger took a bit longer. Of course the fact I used it at work and endured it for three days before getting it set didn't help much. But, after a few months it was barely noticable that anything was ever broken. And I was one mean karate woman with my bright pink cast... no one wanted to fight me for some silly reason.... couldn't get my daughter out on the floor at all! Hope he heals fast. Maybe he can find some cute girl in class to tie his shoes for him?

He's doing better. He took his own cast off at 3 weeks after having it on. He got grounded big time for that. He seen the doctor two weeks later, and he said it looks good. Tyler just has to buddy wrap it while it finishes healing more. He goes back May 1st for another x-ray and for the doctor to check it again.

Hopefully he won't experience 'rain pain' forever... that smarts even years after the break :(
