I still start with an hour on the treadclimber today! I was amazed, was done and home by 8:30 am, that is the ONLY way to go, to get it done before your day officially starts!

2 hours yesterday (1 hour at curves in the AM and 1 hour water aerobics in the evening)

Today, 1 hour (so far) at curves.

I agree, doing it early is the best way to make sure it gets done for the day!

I agree with the morning exercise too its great to get it done right away but for me getting motivated is my problem...once I start I'm fine tho.
I did an hour hike and 45 minute weight lifting today.

I managed to get some exercise in for today. Didn't at all yesterday. Tomorrow might not be a good day to fit exercise in. I will try though.

My plan for the holiday is to exercise first thing in the AM before everything else gets going, to make sure I get something in before the day gets busy and I really don't have time!!

Curves is closed today, but I got on my treadmill this AM. I ran 2 miles, which is kind of amazing because I haven't been on the tread or ran in several weeks (3? ugh) so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do more than a mile!! But, glad to know I could...and I hate to admit it, but it felt great.

Happy 4th everyone!

I missed Thursday, but have exercised every other day this week including today. Plan to work out on Sat to make up for Thursday.

I'm also journaling my eating and it's really helping me stay focused. If I know I have to write it down, I think twice before putting it in my mouth, it seems! Also, it's gotten me back on track 100% on water and taking vitamins: both of which I had gotten kind of inconsistent about.

Spinchick's been at an exercise conference. Good news: I learned a lot. Bad news: I can't move. Everything from the neck down hurts! Ha, ha, ha. My clients are laughing. It was fabulous. I worked with a BOSU (half ball on a flat board), stability balls, medicine balls, Body Bars, boot camp, core training, cycling, gliding disks, etc. There is so much variety out there. I was exhausted, though, at the end. It lasted 3 days. I skipped my last session. I have never done so many variations of lunges and squats! But I'm back. Loaded up with new info, so ask away. My fingers feel OK.....

Have you recovered yet, Helen? :)

I can't think of any specific questions, but anything that was new that was really fun that you could recommend for doing at home?

Yes and no. I recovered from the conference, but then taught 6 really hard Spin classes this week. Then - and learn from this, ha, ha - a cyclist friend of mine invited me on a ride. 40 miles. I said no problem. He said it was climbing. Again I said no problem. I ate my words. I died. It was a hard pace after a hard week. I gave up after 35 miles and had to have a friend come pick me up. The lesson? Listen to that little voice that says you're tired - and don't ride with anyone with thighs larger than yours. :-)

But to answer your question. In terms of fun that you can do at home, I like the gliding disks (http://www.glidingdiscs.com/ there are more DVDs available here http://www.savvierfitness.com/gliding_dvds.asp - even though you not a "pro" they may not know that). I took a gliding core class and a regular gliding class. Last year I took a gliding "gone wild" class as well. I like the feel of the disks and the variety of exercises. I loved the boot camp, but I don't think that would be very motivating for home. And if you get some tubing or a weighted bar or something you can work that into a home "dancing" routing with upbeat, fun music. The BOSU (half stability ball type of thing) is great fun, but again probably better in a class setting.

I want to sympathize that you "gave up" but it's hard when you consider that you gave up after (only!) 35 miles!!!! And even though you were tired, way to go for it. Amazing.

As far as the gliding disks, we've done a little of that at the kickboxing class I was taking, but using paper plates! We stood on the plates and did the "glide" and I was surprised at how you can feel that! I guess it is because you use more muscles for each movement -the push and pull-in each direction.

Yeah, you are right. But my ego took a bruising. :-} With the disks, you feel the pull in all directions. Back and side lunges are great. As are squat - slide to the side - squat. You can also do upper body work, core work, etc., not just legs. Balance work is fun, too. You can buy a cheap balance pad or inflatable disk. Work with a medicine ball, too, to make it more challenging. You can make a circuit with weights, stability balls, etc. and go quickly from exercise to exercise. Add some single legs hops in between, or jump squats or jump lunges, etc. to keep your heart rate up. Or "partner train" with your kids. Have them throw a ball to you as you try to catch it at different positions slightly behind you (like the numbers on a clock face). Works your core. Stand back to back and pass ball around you to the person behind you (works your waist). Or sit on a stability ball and crunch up, using your core to help you throw a (non-weighed) ball to your partner. Then crunch back down, then up and catch the ball, then crunch down and up and throw. It can be really fun.

Hey Helen! Sorry the other board was lost, ugh! Nice to see you posting :))) I have not done whatever you and Tammy are doing. I am so afraid to do anything else, lol! I did get an hour on the treadclimber today :) I have been hanging at a certain weight for about a month now, and want to lose my final lbs starting now. What a long journey but I feel SO much better having dropped 2 sizes and being able to shop at normal stores now! :)

Congrats! Isn't that an amazing feeling? It took me over a year of having lost the weight before I stopped "window shopping" at the plus size stores. Weird. Final pounds are hard. Change up you routine - add intervals - change your diet a little. Keep varying your routine. Add more exercise to your "normal" routine such as taking stairs, parking far away, bringing groceries in one bag at a time. We've heard it before, but it all adds up. Every extra movement you do counts. Good luck. Keep me posted.

Thanks Helen! I think I had fallen into a rut of being happy with my smaller size BUT I know in my head that I am not 'there' yet. It is nice though to be able to eat what I want ( because I FINALLY know how to eat ) and just not gain!

I know. That's pretty great. Pizza, Mexican, dessert - but all in moderation. That's the key. Go for it again when you are ready. There's nothing wrong with taking a breather. I think of it as that it's OK whether you are losing or staying the same, as long as you are not gaining....Oh and you are really cute! Be proud of yourself. Glad you posted your picture.

Ok, Helen, I looked through my log this morning and realized I have held the same weight for 7 weeks now! So, this morning I am kicking it back up as I still have 17 lbs to be in my weight range but 26 to be at my ultimate goal! I know I can do it and feel extremely motivated! I just have to cut out the stuff I have ADDED Back and increase the exercise. I am VERY proud for not gaining though because I know that I have learned new habits that will ensure I will not regain this weight! :) So, off to the gym! Have a great day!!! OH thanks for the compliment. :))) I am not much of a poser for pictures, I am usually the one taking them all... but someone finally snapped me! :)

OK, you guys....

I'm going to be working on some freelance health/fitness articles for a magazine and a web column. I would like your input on what types of articles you find useful - "you," collectively, represent people interested in health/fitness - many of you are parents - you obviously are clever shoppers :-) - you are located all over the county. A perfect cross-section. Right now I am in the process of gathering ideas so it would help to know what types of articles people read. This is a new venture for me, so your brain powers are appreciated. I am thinking in terms of topics like quick ways to increase fitness, women over 40, bla bla. Thanks for your input!

ooh! I have lots of ideas, but I also have company this weekend, so I'll post a few now and more later as I think about it.

1. maintaining (or finding! haha) motivation (in general)
2. motivation (when there is little-to-no family/spouse support!)
3. what (really) to eat
4. why diet "fads" don't work?
5. lo-carb or lo-cal?
6. affordable fitness ideas/fitness w/o a pricy gym membership!

Ok, I missed exercising yesterday. THE SHAME! Just want to say I am on the way out....

Here would be an intersting article. How to recognize when people are not supporting you. I have found that MOST people do not, seriously. They enable me. If I don't exercise I hear, Oh well, we wll miss... LOL! If I eat something bad.... Well, you have to some times they say. That is NOT support, seriously, LOL! Right Tammy? Get off your duff girl, no illness excuses you from going to exercise, lolol! OK, I am headed out for my hour!

But of course. :-) I'm working on a couple of angles right now. One of them is a fitness column for a web site in Los Angeles. The other is pursuing a freelance fitness writing career (in my "free" time, ha, ha). I used to be a journalism major, so I am taking a freelance magazine writing class to refresh myself. I'm excited.

The column in LA will link back to my site, and my site blog (under development) now links to clevermoms.com, so if any of you have any fitness questions, if you could pop them over to the Ask the Trainer section I'll look really important and popular in case someone clicks through. I'll share my blog URL once it's done.

I just ran 2 miles, after having taken some "time" away from consistent exercise. I am amazed that my body didn't totally lose the ability to run that "far" and go for that long!

I'm tired, but feel great for having gotten back to it. Oh the constant struggle it is for me to keep this up!

Tammy, nice job. You might be sore today, though. :-) Your body is capable of a lot, but mostly your brain let your breeze through the run. Before, when you were unsure of yourself, your brain stopped you as you became tired and said, "I can't go on." But now your brains says, "You've done this before body. You work past the fatigue and you'll hit your zone. Go for it."
